About the Role
We are seeking an Emergency Medicine (ED) Registrar – ACEM Trainee to join our Emergency Department here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital.
Our department is accredited as a Tier 2 non-major referral site by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), providing up to 24 months of Emergency Department training. You’ll benefit from a structured teaching program and a wide range of learning opportunities, helping you build a strong foundation for a successful career in Emergency Medicine. We are accredited for completion of the Paediatric Emergency Requirement.
Training Stage 2 trainees have the opportunity to undertake a 3-month Anaesthetics rotation after completing a minimum of six months in the Emergency Department. Additional rotations in specialties such as Intensive Care Medicine, Paediatrics, or General Medicine may also be available by application.
We are accredited for TS4 training and TS4 trainees will be allocated non-clinical shifts to support the completion of quality improvement projects and preparation for teaching sessions, aligning with the broader requirements of this training stage.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The successful candidate would join a team of 16 Emergency Medicine Physicians, 1 Medical Officer, 15 Registrars, 8 House Officers and 4 Nurse Practitioners.
Our Emergency Department handles around 50,000 attendances per year, with a 30% admission rate. The general patient acuity is high, with a significant volume of major trauma cases. We operate four observation unit beds, providing care for a wide range of conditions. Trainees enjoy many opportunities to undertake procedures and lead resuscitations in the emergency department.
Hawke’s Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and more. Although we don’t provide cardiothoracic and neurosurgery, we are supported by a strong regional ICU team, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

- You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
