About the Role
Applications are invited for the 2026 year for a 6 to 12 month attachments across Waikato District Hospitals for Rural Hospital Medicine trainees. We highly encourage applications from our Māori communities.
PLEASE NOTE: This application is for our supported Rural Hospital Medicine training program and not to specific clinical attachments. In addition to submitting this application we encourage you contact the Director of Training and you also need to submit separate applications for your preferred clinical attachments.
Also, Rural Hospital Medicine trainees undertaking any attachments within the Waikato District including in General Practice are encouraged to submit an application to this program for support and coordination.

About the Team/Service
As part of the Te Manawa Taki regional Rural Hospital Medicine training network, Waikato district is committed to supporting development of the Rural Hospital Medicine workforce. Our program offers:
- A Director of Training, Rural Hospital Medicine to provide support and coordination for trainees including developing training opportunities across rural and urban hospitals.
- RNZCGP-DRHM accredited positions (please note: some of these roles are pending ongoing funding approval and so do not appear elsewhere in Annual Recruitment advertisements)
o Te Kuiti - Rural Hospital
o Tokoroa - Rural Hospital
o Thames - Rural Hospital
o Thames - Emergency Medicine (RNZCGP-DRHM accreditation for Emergency Medicine rotation)
o Thames - General Medicine (RACP training accreditation)
- Strong and strengthening relationships with services at Waikato Hospital to support urban attachments
- Options to support General Practice placements
- Options to plan/support your personal training program over multiple years within Waikato District or across the Te Manawa Taki region.
Candidates who have completed two years post graduate training and who have an interest in rural medicine will be considered. Our sites provide excellent generalist training environments with a broad and interesting case mix. Clinical supervision is provided by Rural Hospital Medicine, Emergency Medicine and General Medicine specialists. There are opportunities for career planning and development.
This program is part of the Te Manawa Taki regional training network, which currently includes options for rotations within the Waikato, Lakes and Bay of Plenty districts. All required training placements and elective opportunities are available.
About you
- Have completed 2 years post graduate hospital placements
- Have General Registration with MCNZ (or Provisional for doctors new to NZ with at least two years of experience).
- Be enrolled on the RNZCGP Rural Hospital Medicine training programme or have an interest in Rural Medicine (preference given to RHM trainees, please email Dr Rory Milller if you are interested in joining this programme).
