Ophthalmology Registrars 2026-2027 - Wellington Region

- Permanent Surgery Registrar positions with an allocation of Ophthalmology
- Starting 2 February 2026
- Allocations available at Wellington Regional Hospital
- Involved in day to day running of the acute eye clinic. You will be exposed to a wide variety of eye conditions and learn to manage them.
- Perform minor eye procedures including, but it is not limited to, intravitral injections and cyst drainage
- There will be some time spent in clinics and some theatre exposure.
- You will have assistance and supervision from the Fellows and the on-call consultant.
- This is an ideal pre-requisite from which to apply for the ophthalmology training registrar positions.
- RMO salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. For the current salary bands, please refer to either the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand (SToNZ) or Resident Doctors - Association (RDA) Single-Employer Collective Agreements.

Join our fellow 615+ Resident Medical Officers employed by the 3 areas of the Wellington Region (Capital & Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa Districts) to gain leading experience, medical supervision and training.
The Capital & Coast District provides secondary and tertiary surgical services across two of its three hospitals. It serves a local population of over 300,000 and provides tertiary surgical services to a regional population of over 1 million. Wellington Regional Hospital is a tertiary hospital with modern facilities and offers exciting opportunities and top level training.
If successful, you will work alongside the Ophthalmology clinical team within the limits of your competence in the outpatient and inpatient service at Wellington Hospital.
Moū - About you
- Have a strong interest in ophthalmology. Previous experience preferred but not essential.
- Must have completed two House Officer Years at the start of the 2026 training year.
