About the Role
Applications are invited for Advanced Trainees to work in the cardiology department at Waikato Hospital for a six- or twelve-month run.
These positions are suitable for RMOs who have been successful in the RACP’s Divisional Clinical Examination and are now wishing to pursue a career in Cardiology.
The department is a busy one, with representation from all cardiac subspecialties, including advanced imaging, electrophysiology, structural intervention and acute cardiology. The service admits approximately 6,000 patients a year and performs 3,000 to 4,000 angiograms, 1,000 angioplasties as well as over 400 electrophysiological procedures in a year. As an Advanced Trainee, you will be exposed to general and subspecialty cardiac diagnostics, interventions and management for a wide range of cardiac pathologies. We also have a close working relationship with our on-site cardiothoracic surgeons, and offer outreach services to the regional peripheral hospitals.
If you are an overseas doctor would you please visit the Medical Council of New Zealand website to ensure that your qualifications meet their criteria for registration to practice medicine in New Zealand. If you have undertaken registrar training outside of Australia or New Zealand, you will need to have RACP approval to proceed to Advanced Training through their Recognition of Prior Learning.

About the Team/Service
Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and the major tertiary referral centre providing specialised and emergency healthcare for the Waikato and Te Manawi Taki or Midlands area, with a catchment population of 900,000 people. The cardiology department has state-of the-art facilities, has an active research unit
We are based in Hamilton, the third largest city in the North Island. It is 1½ hours from Auckland via a new expressway, and offers a great lifestyle. As the largest employer in Hamilton, there is a varied and approachable social network based around the hospital. It is within easy reach of both west coast surfing and east coast leisure beaches. To be successfully appointed to this role, you will:
- Have successfully completed the RACP’s Divisional Written and Clinical Examinations
- Have prior experience in Cardiology
- Be eligible to work in New Zealand
