Tū Māia, Regional Youth Forensics Services is dedicated to providing exceptional forensic psychiatric care to young individuals within our region. We are committed to transforming lives through comprehensive, evidence-based treatment and support, within a framework of legal and ethical integrity.
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team. This role is pivotal in delivering specialised mental health services to youth involved in the forensic system. The ideal candidate will combine clinical expertise with a deep understanding of the legal and ethical landscape, ensuring the highest standards of care.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including risk assessments for self-harm, harm to others, and vulnerability.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans incorporating pharmacological interventions, psychotherapy, and behavioral strategies.
- Prepare forensic reports and provide expert testimony in court, clearly communicating complex psychiatric concepts to legal professionals.
- Build strong therapeutic relationships with young people, taking into account their developmental stage, cultural background, and individual experiences.
- Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including social workers, psychologists, lawyers, and law enforcement officers.
- Stay updated with the latest research and best practices in youth forensics, applying evidence-based treatments.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to the development and evaluation of forensic psychiatric programmes and services for youth.
- Manage acute psychiatric crises and implement risk management plans to ensure the safety of the youth and others.
- Adhere to ethical standards and professional guidelines, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring informed consent.
Qualifications
- Medical degree with specialization in Psychiatry.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Extensive experience in youth psychiatry and forensic settings.
- Strong diagnostic and assessment skills, with proficiency in using standardised assessment tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build rapport with young people.
- Knowledge of the legal systems, laws, and regulations governing youth forensics.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to cultural competency and providing culturally sensitive care.
- Leadership and mentoring skills, with experience in programme development and evaluation.
Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills
You must be vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (www.mcnz.org.nz) with a current Annual Practising Certificate or eligible for the same.
It is essential that you have experience with child services and neurodevelopment pathways. Also essential, is experience and interest in community care for client and adolescents with developmental disorders.
