Fellow/SMO (1 FTE) Pain Medicine or Pain interested, Te Whatu Ora

South & East Auckland Careers Logo

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Pain Fellow or pain-interested SMO to join our pain teams.

This is a flexible fixed term position which ends February 2024 and could be full or part time. Preference will be given to current trainees of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of ANZCA, or those considering embarking on training. Our department is accredited by the Faculty of Pain Medicine for training.

The successful applicant will become a member of our outpatient chronic, and inpatient acute and complex, multidisciplinary pain teams. They will work across Middlemore Hospital, the Manukau Super Clinic, and other outlying pain clinics.

Middlemore Hospital is a busy acute tertiary hospital that amongst multiple specialities is home to the National Burns Service, a regional spinal cord injury service, and Kidz First Children’s Hospital.

Our chronic pain team is a small, experienced and collegial multidisciplinary team comprised of Health Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Nurse Specialists, and Doctors with different specialist backgrounds (Psychiatry, Anaesthetics, Musculoskeletal Medicine, General Practice, Obstetrics and Gynaecology). We work with patients and their whānau within a biopsychosocial framework, providing initial triple-discipline assessments, individual specific treatments, and several group programs.

Attachments with affiliated services (including rehabilitation services, palliative care, the Community Alcohol and Drug Service, adolescent health, or mental health) may be available depending on the successful applicant’s areas of interest and level of training. We do not offer regular exposure to diagnostic or therapeutic pain medicine procedures.

Our friendly, supportive and passionate teams have a culture of continuous improvement. We are team players, contributing to our collective skillset with a variety of clinical and non-clinical interests and skills. Our Fellow is expected to contribute to quality assurance and educational activities.

Our vision is to work in partnership with its communities to improve the health status of all, with particular emphasis on Māori and Pasifika peoples and communities with health disparities. Our pain teams aim to make a positive difference to the people we serve, the communities we work in, and each other.
