Core Midwives - Oromairaki (Selwyn Health Hub)

Christchurch Careers Logo

  • Two permanent part-time positions 0.4 FTE and 0.5FTE
  • Be part of establishing a dynamic new birthing unit within a community health hub
  • Work across the Women - s Health Service in Ōtautahi (Christchurch)

Mō te tūnga | About the role

We have a wonderful opportunity for experienced Registered Midwives to join our team alongside LMCs, committed to facilitating birthing in the community.

The role requires you to be available for all shifts within a rolling roster. This position will provide for the Oromairaki rostering in Selwyn as a priority. On occasion if that unit is quiet we expect shifts will be moved to other maternity facilities. We will also orientate you to our other facilities in Christchurch. If you are not confident providing complex care, then we would be sure to only transfer shifts to the maternity ward.

Christchurch Women - s Hospital (CWH), based in central Ōtautahi (Christchurch), is a modern acute, teaching hospital for midwifery and obstetrics. Canterbury has over 6000 births per annum and we are the tertiary referral centre for the bulk of Te Waipounamu (the South Island).

Canterbury is fortunate to have four community units with a new central city unit opening in 2023. In May this year Oromairaki replaced one of the existing four community units (Lincoln), and is a contemporary new birthing unit within the Selwyn Health Hub (Toka Hapāi) locatedin Rolleston.

Ko wai koe | About You

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a committed and motivated individual who is looking to be part of the maternity strategy to promote a model of care change that seeks to facilitate more women having the confidence, if well, to birth at our community units.

As numbers fluctuate in community units the successful midwife will enjoy the variation of being open to working in our other units across the Women - s Health Service

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

This role requires the following:

  • Experienced Registered Midwife with a current NZ practicing certificate
  • Able to practise autonomously in the community including confidence with obstetric and neonatal emergencies and ability to cannulate.
  • A passion for primary birthing and supporting women to initiate breastfeeding
  • A commitment to equity and our responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi within maternity services
  • The ability to be adaptable, flexible and solution focused
