The details: Fixed term sabbatical cover (approx. Nov 2022 – June 2023 – negotiable), 25-35 hours per week (negotiable)
NB: Another fixed term role may become available for the second half of 2023, so there may be the option to extend this appointment. That should be clarified by the end of 2022.
We are seeking a Radiation Oncologist (RO) to join our progressive and multidisciplinary department to cover the work of ROs taking sabbatical leave (maximum of one RO to be covered at any time) including:
- Care of patients on treatment
- Follow-up clinics
- Returning patients (e.g. recently discharged from follow-up, but re-referred with a new issue)
- Participate in the on-call roster in some manner
- Assist with peripheral clinic work (e.g. Thames, Rotorua, Gisborne) that would usually be done by the RO on sabbatical leave.
We are looking for a RO with strong clinical skills and the ability to cover a range of tumour streams. The remuneration package for this role is in accordance with the ASMS Senior Medical Officers MECA.
Waikato DHB provides the full spectrum of Radiation Oncology services. Our department runs on the Eclipse planning system and has four linear accelerators able to provide all aspects of modern radiation delivery including rotational IMRT and image guidance through cone beam CT. The department also has superficial kilovoltage equipment for the treatment of skin cancers.
We are the national leader in HDR brachytherapy treatment, with an active brachytherapy programme treating multiple different anatomic sites with an emphasis on cervical and prostate brachytherapy.
We routinely use stereotactic ablative radiation therapy for treatment of early lung cancer and lung metastases and also deliver linear accelerator based fractionated radiosurgery for the treatment of brain metastases. The successful applicant would have the opportunity to be involved in the development of radiosurgical techniques to other body sites if they chose. We are also the national provider of total skin electron therapy for skin lymphomas.
At Waikato Hospital you would join a team of 10 radiation oncologists, seven medical oncologists, seven haematologists and seven palliative care physicians. As a Regional Cancer Centre we provide oncology services to a regional population of approximately 750,000 with radiation therapy treatment provided at Waikato Hospital and outpatient clinics in Hamilton and three secondary hospitals.
Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and one of five campuses of the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The appointee has opportunities to become involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The candidate must have qualifications that would satisfy the requirements for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and must have a full current driver licence.
