Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
We have an opportunity for an experienced Hepatologist/Transplant Physician to join the New Zealand Liver Transplant Service.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the post of a 1.0 FTE Hepatologist at the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit based at Auckland City Hospital. NZLTU provides a national liver transplant service for New Zealand, assessing 80-120 adults and transplanting 40-50 adults per annum. NZLTU provides long-term follow-up for almost 800 adult recipients, in both weekly local clinics and regular regional outreach clinics.

NZLTU provides a national multidisciplinary service for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for almost 300 new cases per annum.

NZLTU also provides secondary and tertiary inpatient and outpatient management for patients with acute and chronic liver diseases. In addition to transplant and HCC clinics, there are weekly specialist hepatology clinics for patients with viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, biliary disease and decompensated cirrhosis.

NZLTU contains the Liver Research Unit, with a fully equipped laboratory and day-stay facility for the assessment and treatment of study participants. Dedicated staff include 4 study coordinators, 5 research nurses, 3 research fellows and scientist. 

You will join a multidisciplinary team within NZLTU, including five hepatologists, four transplant-hepatobiliary surgeons, nurse practitioners and nurse specialists and other allied health professionals who are driven by providing a high-quality clinical service.

You will participate in a 1-in-4 on-call roster, to provide tertiary inpatient management for acute and chronic liver failure and expert hepatology advice to colleagues around New Zealand.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills
You will participate in all aspects of our clinical service. Experience in liver transplantation and the management or acute and chronic liver failure is essential. An interest in the management of HCC, metabolic liver disease, or autoimmune liver disease is preferred.

A track record in research is strongly encouraged and there will be opportunities to conduct both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical research within the Liver Research Unit.

You will be encouraged to participate in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Auckland.

Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand is required.

We have a strong philosophy of quality improvement and innovation in healthcare delivery in which you would be expected to contribute. Experience in delivering healthcare virtually will also be beneficial.

• Vocational training in Gastroenterology
• At least the equivalent of the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians
