Emergency Medicine Specialist
Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury (Timaru Hospital Emergency Department) is looking for a NZ Registered/Registerable doctor with either emergency and/or rural hospital training experience to join our permanent staff.
We are a 12-bed department, covering a wide range of emergency presentations, including trauma, with backup from inpatient teams including anaesthesia, paediatrics, mental health, O&G, surgical and internal medicine specialists. The ED team is a tight-knit group, consisting of 6.7 FTE SMO - s and a core of experienced and multi-skilled ED nurses.
The roster consists of 3 overlapping 9-hour shifts, (plus some degree of House Officer assistance). Considerable efforts are made to accommodate individual preferences while rostering.
There is a degree of flexibility here in that we intend appointing the successful applicant on a part-time basis of a 0.7FTE commitment.
Engagement on a fixed term basis is also a potential option we may consider for the right person, (such as someone seeking a working holiday/sabbatical placement type arrangement). Basically, please talk to us about your preference.
A major advantage here is the roster has NO night shift and NO afterhours 'on call' requirement and typically operates on a 6-week cycle, thereby allowing some degree of predictability for planning one - s personal commitments & interests.
Successful applicants will be offered a position based on the DHB/ASMS MECA terms and conditions, including a generous CME allowance. SCDHB has strong links with the University of Otago School of Medicine with opportunities for SMOs to become involved as Clinical Supervisors.
Timaru Hospital is formally classified as a Level 2 Hospital with 130 beds offering a range of surgical, medical, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric and mental health services. Despite (or maybe because) of our smaller size, we are considered to be a progressive Hospital, open to new ideas and distributive leadership giving clinicians a real opportunity to make change and improvements.
South Canterbury offers a lifestyle opportunity second to none: this is an easy place to live, family friendly, known to have one of the lowest crime rates in NZ, with instant access to an astounding array of outdoor activities - one of New Zealand's top ten rated beaches, a number of ski fields with both learner and advanced slopes, lakes and mountains - (the iconic - McKenzie Country - is on our doorstep).
When it comes to public amenities you are spoilt for choice with multiple golf courses, modern aquatic/gym facility and an excellent array of sporting venues.
The climate is great: hot summers, crisp winters, there is no such thing as a long commute to work, great properties, including lifestyle blocks, are still relatively affordable by NZ standards and primary and secondary educational facilities are superb with two internationally renowned Universities within two hours - drive.
Currently the South Canterbury region boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in NZ, thus optimising the potential opportunities across a range of professions for partners to also seek employment locally.
