Medical Registrar (commencing July 2022)

Southern District Health Board (Invercargill/Dunedin) Careers Logo

Southland Hospital

Southern DHB is currently seeking applications from RMOs interested in joining the team at Southland Hospital as a Medical Registrar.

The role

Southland Hospital Department of Medicine is fully staffed with New Zealand trained General Physicians, many of whom are also qualified in various subspecialties. All medical patients are admitted to General Medicine, unlike larger hospitals where some patients are siphoned off to specialty inpatient teams. This ensures excellent breadth and depth of exposure to a wide range of medical conditions. We maintain the care for acutely unwell patients including those requiring ICU admission, which means that advanced trainees can satisfy the high acuity requirement of their training by doing General Medicine at Southland, rather than having to do a separate high acuity run.

We will upskill you in managing non-invasive ventilation, administering Thrombolysis therapy, and pleural procedures as we offer a truly all-encompassing General Medicine experience. We operate on a six team model so each team is on call one day per week. We also have a robust system for dividing workload of acute patients, and generally limit the post take ward round numbers to a maximum of 10 patients to ensure a better experience for patients and their medical teams. The acute workload is not onerous and ensures a quality training experience and consistently desirable job satisfaction.

There is opportunity for exposure to ambulatory work within the onsite subspecialties provided by the dual trained General Physicians which include Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Nephrology and Gastroenterology. All other medical subspecialties are covered by visiting consultants from Dunedin Hospital, and there is ample time and opportunity to nuture any subspecialty interests amongst trainees alongside their General Medicine experience.

We have a comprehensive high quality in house education programme which involves weekly journal club, morbidity and mortality meetings, x-ray conferences, and case presentations. There is formal regional registrar teaching every Thursday afternoon aimed at preparing trainees for the FRACP written examination. The teaching programme is well attended by registrars who are consistently able to attend due to the very manageable workloads. We also have an onsite medical library.

Southland Hospital is accredited for two years of basic training and one year of advanced training. We have a superb track record with getting trainees successfully through both written and clinical exams. We are an FRACP clinical examination venue and have FRACP examiners on site within the department.

The consultant team is very friendly and supportive and able to cater on an individual basis for trainees at every level of training from first year registrars up to those about to become Consultants. We can provide a truly superior, high quality General Medicine training experience. In combination with enviable work life balance, this makes for a very attractive medical registrar position.
