We are seeking a PGY3+ with an interest in equity, Māori Ora and kaupapa Māori education to rotate through this exciting new 1.0 FTE role made up of 0.5 FTE Māori Education Fellow and 0.5 FTE clinical component allocated to a service (by agreement at appointment). 

Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and holds stewardship for equitable health outcomes for Māori as tangata whenua as the highest priority.

The aim of this role is to address health inequities for Māori in Northland, aiming for workforce population parity for Māori.  It focuses on improving the experience and cultural support for the medical workforce pipeline of: Medical student/Intern/RMO/SMO or GP, with a particular focus on interns.

Job Description outline for the 0.5 FTE Māori Education Fellow component:

• Assist the Te Whatu Ora Northern Region Medical Education fellows in applying for funding and co-designing a six-monthly kaupapa Māori education day
• Liaise with the Medical Education team, Te Poutokomanawa and interns
• Liaise with Māori GPs/rural doctors/SMOs/Registrars to invite them to teach and/or attend house officer teaching
• Liaise with and link with Te Whatu Ora Health NZ  - Northern education fellows
• Organise teaching programme, venue and speakers in collaboration with the Medical Education Programme Coordinator
• Aid the education team to embed Māori Ora and cultural safety within the intern formal protected teaching programme
• Assist the education and clinical teams in providing a culturally safe, supportive environment where Māori doctors are able to thrive
• Support and grow interns' ability to assert their Māoritanga in a hospital setting
• To assist the RMO Unit and Human Resources department to create formalised, flexible processes for Māori interns who may have additional cultural obligations, to enable those obligations to be met
• Assist the Medical Education team to collect feedback and measure the impact of the programme and continuously improve
• Help organise wellbeing initiatives, such as quarterly noho.

The goal is a holistic, kaupapa Māori programme designed and led by Māori for Māori students/interns/RMOs with the support and coordination of Te Whatu Ora Te Tai Tokerau's Intern Governance Group, Medical Education Programme Coordinator, RMO Unit, Te Poutokomanawa (Māori Health Directorate), Māori SMOs, Primary care, GPs, Rural and community doctors.
