Malignant Hyperthermia Laboratory Technician

Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua MidCentral (MidCentral) is part of Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand and provides healthcare services to over 180,000 people across the Manawatū, Horowhenua and Tararua regions. With a large hospital campus in Palmerston North, it also provides key health care and support services to neighbouring communities.
The Opportunity
The Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) Technician is responsible for performing the laboratory work associated with the In-Vitro Contracture Test (IVCT) for MH susceptibility. This includes preparing for the IVCT; collecting the muscle tissue from the surgical theatres; dissecting the tissue; performing the actual test; collecting and reporting the results; and ensuring the laboratory and equipment are left clean, tidy, and ready for the next IVCT. Other laboratory tasks including restocking of supplies, basic maintenance of the laboratory equipment, and auditing are also required. Demonstration of the IVCT to staff members and other guests is required on occasion.
The role is performed on a limited, part-time, as-required basis: generally, no more than 6.0 hours on Friday- and occasional Thursday mornings as notified.
We currently have the opportunity for a casual employee to join this service as cover for leave.
We are seeking:
- Core laboratory skills are essential.
- Be familiar with preparation of solutions to a high level of accuracy, and carrying out the IVCT test with precision and attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills
- Must be comfortable handling human tissue samples
- Proven ability to carry out duties in a professional manner
- Good interpersonal skills
