About the role | Korero mō te tūranga
The rural hospital generalist will work with the other rural hospital generalists, general practitioners and hospital specialist doctors to provide services to people of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, Te Matau a Māui Hawkes’ Bay Wairoa catchment area and will provide clinical services that include emergency, in-patient and out-patient assessment and management of people requiring hospital medical care. The role will provide leadership, advice and support to the Group Leadership team, relevant staff within Primary Healthcare Organisations and other organisations within the sector, with a focus on addressing disparities in health care provision.
The successful applicant will need to:
- Demonstrate knowledge, leadership and understanding of key requirements of Health NZ strategies by implementing services that are evidence based across the district
- Provide acute, chronic and rehabilitation care to the community of Wairoa, including critical emergency presentations and support of the primary birthing unit
- Work across the health continuum helping to enhance primary care practice and access advice for primary care practitioners
- Ensure and prioritise a focus on patient safety and quality relating to care and processes within the Medical Directorate
- Deliver organisational KPI’s including relevant MOH targets, and service plans
- Recognise and support the delivery of the Hawke's Bay Health sector vision

About our team | Mō tō mātou rōpū
The Rural Hospital Generalist Role at Wairoa Health is based within Specialist and Community Services Group in Hawke’s Bay who provide diverse community and specialist services over a large geographical area from Central Hawkes Bay to Wairoa. Wairoa Health is at approximately two hours (132 kms) from Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital based in Hastings.
Wairoa Health is a rural hospital and health centre that provides 24/7 emergency care (categorised Level 2). It has nine overnight medial beds, two Emergency care beds and provides primary maternity and primary birthing care, some outpatient services, and same-day surgical services (this includes dental) are currently delivered by a visiting surgical bus.
Wairoa Health also has an onsite pathology service for urgent blood and diagnostic testing and collecting specimens. It has an on-site hospital pharmacy (not for community dispensing), X-ray services (Monday to Friday and acute on call) and a limited ultrasound service.
Queen Street Practice is the local primary care provider and is collated at Wairoa Health. This General Practice provides primary care services and provides medical staff for the inpatient ward and ED.

Wairoa is surrounded by picturesque farmland and the sea nearby. Lake Waikaremoana is 50km away from Wairoa with walking tracks, fishing; and Mahia Beach hosts good surfing, diving and fishing. There are airports in Napier and Gisborne providing domestic flights to Wellington and Auckland and the rest of New Zealand.

- Clinical experience in rural hospital context including emergency care and inpatient management as an independent practitioner
- Credentialled or the ability to be credentialed in rural hospital medicine
- Value relationship-based practice
- Skilled communicator. Written and oral presentations are articulate, relevant and concise. Open and honest communication style with colleagues and multidisciplinary team members
- Open and responsive to customer needs
- Demonstrate an understanding of continuous quality improvement
- Values integration with primary care and population health approach to clinical care
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of local tikanga and Māori culture sufficiently to be able to respond appropriately to Māori
- Is visible, welcoming and accessible to Māori consumers and their whānau
- Actively engages in respectful relationships with Māori consumers and whānau and the Māori community
- Actively seeks ways to work with Māori consumers and whānau to maximise Māori experience
- Actively facilitates the participation of whānau in the care and support of their whānau member
