INTENSIVE CARE CONSULTANT FOR TE WHATU ORA HAWKES BAY.

Hawke's Bay hospital is an increasingly innovative organisation providing opportunities to make a difference to patients and to the wider health sector.

We have a new position in our current team for a qualified Intensive Care Physician. This is a 9-month fixed term position to cover sabbatical leave.

The Hawke’s Bay Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a Level 2 ICU providing a high standard of general intensive care to both adults and children including complex multi-system life support. The Unit is capable of providing non-invasive and mechanical ventilation, extra-corporeal renal replacement therapy and invasive cardiac monitoring.  Transfers to other intensive care units are considered for patients requiring specialised care and may include ventilated burns patients (Middlemore), non-ventilated burns and plastic surgery patients (Lower Hutt), Cardio-Thoracic (Wellington or Auckland), neurosurgery (Wellington), and critically ill paediatric patients (PICU, Starship in Auckland).

The Unit has a total of 13 beds: 4–6 High Dependency beds and 5-7 Intensive Care beds, including a negative pressure isolation room, with ensuite facilities and an ante-room for strict isolation precautions.  The Intensive Care Service also provides a Critical Care Transport Service for the Hospital, Retrievals from Wairoa Hospital and Inter-Hospital Transports.  The Unit also participates in the Resuscitation and Rapid Response Service within the Hospital.

The Intensive Care Unit currently has a team of eight Consultants and 12 Registrars.  Our Intensive Care Physicians have high clinical profile within the department and are committed to the delivery of high-quality medical care.

There are opportunities to be involved in hospital wide initiatives to improve both Intensive and Hospital Care. The Department offers the opportunity for a wide range of clinical interests including support for clinical research.  The Department is currently involved in national and international studies.

Hawke's Bay Hospital is a 330-bed accredited facility providing acute and elective care for the Hawke’s Bay region (a population of 180,000 people). The Regional hospital in Hastings also has links to the region’s rural services in Wairoa and Waipukurau.

Hawke’s Bay is on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand and is famous for a warm and sunny climate, fine wine and Art Deco architecture. There are excellent schools and a wide range of sporting and leisure opportunities. Overall the Hawke’s Bay offers an enviable lifestyle to you and your family.

Applicants must be registered or eligible for vocational registration, with the New Zealand Medical Council as an Intensive Care Physician and be a Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM), or equivalent.  Experience in managing paediatric Intensive Care patients is preferred.
