We are seeking an Ophthalmology Registrar to join our team of Eye Consultants, Specialist Nurses and Technicians in February 2026.
From study support and professional development, through to growing new services and facilities, the future is bright at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora - Te Tai Tokerau (Health New Zealand). Whangārei is the largest hospital in Northland, providing secondary care services for the region, supported by four regional hospitals. Here you'll be doing what matters to your career, all whilst enjoying a flexible and healthy work-life balance.
Health New Zealand is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and holds stewardship for equitable health outcomes for Māori as Tāngata Whenua as the highest priority.
About our Service and the Role
The Northland Ophthalmology team includes five Consultant Ophthalmologists and three visiting Specialists from Auckland who provide a wide range of elective and acute services.
We offer a general ophthalmology experience only available in a district hospital setting – this includes a very high incidence of skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, and the opportunity to gain a broad experience of lid surgery. As diabetes is extremely common in Northland you will gain experience of laser and intravitreal injections in its management, and of ARMD. We have ultrasound, OCT and Corneal Topography, including corneal cross-linking, available and Pascal and YAG and SLT lasers.
Working one on one with consultants as one of two Ophthalmology Registrars will provide opportunities for extensive on the job teaching. When on-call with consultant cover you will gain experience of acute ophthalmology with the opportunity to experience Ophthalmic Trauma being invaluable in our rural setting.
We offer a specialty wide service with surgeons with special interests in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Anterior Segment and Medical Retina and Oculoplastics, as well as visiting specialists in Glaucoma and VR, and a truly general ophthalmology clinic setup. Other than Vitreo-retinal work (which is referred to Auckland) we provide surgical management of most eye conditions.
Our training program includes weekly teaching including journal club and teaching for registrars, audits and regular M&M meetings. You will be encouraged to take part in the teaching program and closely supervised and supported in clinics and theatres in acute and elective settings.
You will get the opportunity to travel to Bay of Islands and Kaitaia Hospitals for visiting clinics and theatre lists.
