Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Northland are seeking ICU Registrars to join us for 2026.
Whangārei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland, providing secondary care services for the region, supported by four rural hospitals. Northland (Te Tai Tokerau) covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 201,000. It is a great place to work and live.

About the Role and the Service
- A nine bed level 2 ICU – providing services for children and adults requiring critical care support.
- Accredited for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine for six months of core ICU training, foundation training and rural exposure requirement. It is also accredited by the Colleges of Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, and Rural Hospital Medicine training.
- Part of the hospital emergency response teams
- Provides interhospital transports within Northland and to Auckland via various modes including helicopter, fixed wing and road ambulance
- Access to multiple teaching sessions and regular quality assurance meetings
For CICM trainees there is a pathway to do one-year of anaesthesia time. The Northland anaesthesia department offer excellent clinical exposure and training. Trainees from other specialties may also have access to some rostered anaesthesia time.
Ideally applicants will have at least six months experience as a Registrar in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine or Surgery. Paediatric experience as an SHO or Registrar would be advantageous as well as Intensive Care or Anaesthetic Registrar time.
