Location: Whanganui Hospital and Community Settings
Permanent, Part-Time up to 0.6 FTE

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced General Practitioner to step into a strategic clinical leadership role as Primary Care Liaison within Health New Zealand – Whanganui.
In this role, you will champion integrated care by strengthening communication, coordination and collaboration between primary care teams and hospital-based services. Your work will support improved access to specialist services, reduce avoidable hospital admissions, and ensure continuity of care for our communities.
This is a unique opportunity to shape future models of care as part of the Pae Ora transformation and health sector reforms.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
As Primary Care Liaison, you will:
- Act as the key conduit between primary care and secondary care services
- Support and educate primary care teams on referral pathways and service access
- Facilitate earlier clinical intervention and patient-centred management plans
- Champion Health Pathways, Transfer of Care and Test Results Responsibility, and system navigation resources
- Collaborate with hospital and community clinicians to improve referral quality and patient flow
- Contribute to achieving national health targets, including Elective Services Patient Flow Indicators (ESPIs)
- Continue to maintain active clinical practice as part of your role
Mōu | About you
To thrive in this role, you will have:
- Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in General Practice
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in clinical practice within the NZ health system
- Demonstrated leadership and relationship-building skills across care sectors
- A commitment to equity and improving health outcomes
- The ability to influence through collegial engagement and evidence-based advocacy
- A pragmatic, collaborative approach to complex system challenges
Ideally you will bring experience in service design, transformation projects, or working groups focused on clinical governance or health performance.
