Gastroenterologist

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role
The Gastroenterology Department at Palmerston North Hospital, New Zealand, serves the university town of Palmerston North, and the Manawatū district. We provide quality outpatient gastroscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP, liver elastography, outpatient clinical care, inpatient gastroenterology care and bowel cancer screening services to the 180,000 people in our district. We are affiliated to the University of Otago, have a training gastroenterology registrar in our department, and have a research relationship with Massey University. This environment provides excellent opportunity for both teaching and research. Please note that the successful applicant will form part of our team providing a general gastroenterology service. Our ERCP service is currently fully staffed and so this position does not include practicing ERCP.
Palmerston North Hospital is a secondary hospital and offers most medical and surgical specialities with the exception of Cardiothoracic, Plastic and Neurosurgery. We are the base for a regional head and neck oncology service, which has responsibility for a population of 550,000 and draws patients from Whanganui, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay. This means we are exposed to managing the gastrointestinal aspects of a tertiary cancer care service.
We can offer:
- An encouraging learning environment where you will continue to grow and be challenged
- A diverse, dynamic and collegial team environment
- Fulfilling and challenging work with great lifestyle options
- Six weeks annual leave per annum
- 10 paid days per annum available for continued medical education including a generous allowance towards costs of course and travel
- Generous relocation packages for national and international candidates
To be eligible for this position you must either hold vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, be eligible for locum tenens or VOC3 registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (www.mcnz.co.nz for further information).
The collegial relationships between departments are strong and consultation with other consultants is easy, either formally with multidisciplinary meetings or informally as required. There is an active postgraduate medical society and there are excellent clinical library facilities.
